We’re a family business
Newhay is a family-business, owned and managed by husband and wife team, Ian and Helen Burrows.
Ian was managing a 300-acre farm near Selby, North Yorkshire, when he was asked to supply a local trainer with haylage of a consistent quality to feed race horses. With a background in agriculture and a long-term passion for farming, Ian researched the market and soon gained a reputation for supplying the equestrian trade with essential feeds and specialist blends of ryegrass, oatstraw and Timothy Hay.
In a drive to improve quality further, Ian turned his attention to manufacturing and packing and was able to reduce the high levels of mould and dust so prevalent in hay products at that time.
Using his knowledge of engineering, Ian created a unique manufacturing process for Newhay involving advanced drying technologies and dust extraction. This enabled the business to create a much faster production process, which removed moisture and retained a higher nutritional content, once the hay had been cut.
As a result, Newhay is now the leading grower and producer of specialist hay products in the UK, which supplies a wide range of products for many well known, equine and pet food manufacturers and retailers in the UK and Europe, as well as selling direct.
In 2012 Ian Burrows won the much coveted, national Farmer’s Weekly Award; “Diversification Farmer of the Year”. Known as the “Oscars of the farming world”, the award recognised Newhay’s commitment and dedication to producing premium animal feeds, which are unrivalled in the market.
Newhay is proud to adopt the very highest standards of animal feed production, demonstrated by achieving accreditation and certified membership of both the Universal Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS) and The Feed Materials Assurance Scheme (FEMAS)
Newhay is the only UK producer to hold a BETA NOPS equine certificate, recognised by race horse owners and breeders as an essential requirement when feeding high performance horses.
The environment is taken very seriously at Newhay. Initiatives to encourage and protect the natural habitat include:
- Sowing lucerne and natural meadow plants to encourage nectar loving insects
- Cutting field margins after the nesting season to protect birdlife
- Cutting sections out of the fields during harvest, to help wildlife escape
All hay produced at Newhay is laboratory tested at Scientec, a state-of-the-art, fully-accredited facility in Cawood, Yorkshire. Our regular programme of product testing continually monitors nutritional content. This is a vital part of our work at Newhay as it ensures that levels of bacteria and mould spores are kept to a minimum in all our hay and feed products.
Newhay has gained a reputation for producing a consistently high standard of premium, hay feed. Our unique “field to pack” farm and manufacturing process takes place within 48 hours of harvesting. Developed over time, each process has been designed to keep hay as dry, fresh and green as possible by; turning the crop several times a day, machine drying, storage in dark, closed barns; dust and metal extraction.
